OIT-BNE: „Use-oriented development of an Outcome-Indicator-Test for assessment and operationalisation of student's competencies in Education for Sustainable Development in Germany.“ (Jan 2019 - Dec 2021)

The UN has proclaimed the five-year UNESCO Global Action Programme on ESD (Education for Sustainable Development, 2015-2019) as a contribution to the implementation of the Sustinable Development Goals (SDGs) that were expressed in the Agenda 2030. The main goal is to educate every persons' reasoning and action to effectuate change for society as a whole.

In Germany, this process is coordinated by the national platform for ESD whose efforts are summarised in the 'action plan ESD'. An important aspect of these goals is a professional monitoring and the development of indicators for ESD that can be integrated in established reports to evaluate the collaborative efforts.
In this process, the goal-evaluation has so had an inferior standing. This project aims to achieve a cross-disciplinary modelling of competencies which will evaluate the results of ESD-methods on an empirical basis. The question concerning the effects on learners which are mirrored in their competencies will be explored. This research project's goal is to develop an ESD-Outcome-Indicator-Set - firstly applicable to the school environment - which can be used to assess the success of competence-building.

Education and especially education for sustainable development (ESD) are considered important mechanisms for the transformation to a sustainably developing society. The procurement of competenties for forming society that is supposed to show traces in knowledge, motivation and action is meant to empower individuals to advocate a more sustainable society. In our project, this comprehensive outcome of ESD is to be monitored as holistically and as dependable as possible.
